Welcome to the October 30th edition of First Listen Friday!
Oneohtrix Point Never released Magic Oneohtrix Point Never today via Warp Records. The new LP arrives after Daniel Lopatin’s soundtrack for the Safdie Brothers’ film Uncut Gems last year (The Weeknd acted in the film and contributed vocals to “No Nightmares” as well as produced on this album). The album has been described as having a “psychedelic radio aesthetic”, map that onto Oneohtrix Point Never’s trademark sound and it makes for a very engaging listen. If you’re into electronic and/or experimental music definitely give this album a listen. My favorite tracks here were “Auto & Allo”, “Long Road Home”, “No Nightmares”, and “Nothing’s Special”.
TOBACCO released Hot Wet & Sassy today via Ghostly International. Similarly to Oneohtrix Point Never, TOBACCO has developed a signature sound over his career. And much like on Oneohtrix Point Never’s new LP, TOBACCO has really honed in on his sound with this new effort. I’d say this album is my favorite TOBACCO project since Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Cobra Juicy from 2012 which is an album I absolutely love. This new LP features some of my favorite TOBACCO tracks to date in “Centaur Skin”, “Jinmenken”, “Road Warrior Pisces”, and the Trent Reznor featuring “Babysitter”. There’s a lot of great noisy distorted grooves on this one, check it out.
Mogwai announced a new album, As The Love Continues which will arrive on February 19th of next year. “Dry Fantasy” is the first single from the forthcoming LP. It’s a gorgeous soundscape of post-rock and electronic sound and I can’t wait to hear more from the project.
Routine is a new collaboration between Melina Duterte of Jay Som fame and Annie Truscott from Chastity Belt. Their EP And Other Things arrives next month and lead single “Cady Road” has a lovely country-tinged indie sound. Definitely looking forward to hearing more of the EP.
The Avalanches released another single from their forthcoming LP We Will Always Love You which will arrive on December 11th, 2020. “Interstellar Love” features Leon Bridges on vocals. The singles thus far have been great so I’ve got high hopes for the album.
KILN released “Koi”, the first single from their new LP Astral Welder which is coming out via Ghostly International. The label’s announcement states the album will be “a fizzing, electro-charged gallery of propulsion and abraded tone”. I’m loving all the textures of the sounds on this track, really has me interested in what the rest of the album will sound like.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are releasing a live album and concert film from a show recorded at the Independent in San Francisco back in 2016. “Evil Death Roll” from that show is featured here.
That’s it for this week, the Spotify playlist for this edition is right here.
Happy Halloween!
great as always !!!!
