7/31/20: Lauren Bousfield, Fontaines D.C., !!!, Rival Consoles and more...
Another First Listen Friday has arrived! I’ve got a lot of great stuff to share this week, let’s get to it.
Lauren Bousfield released Palimpsest this week and this album is something to behold. The amount of sounds and ideas comes at a dizzying rate but it all holds together beautifully somehow. The more I settled in the more I loved it, it definitely feels like music that is pushing boundaries. You don’t just have to take my word for it, other artists are also out there recommending this one.
Fontaines D.C.’s second album A Hero’s Death is here and it’s a good one. I’ve featured some fantastic rock in the post-punk realm lately and this is in that area as well but I wouldn’t say that’s the sole classifier, rock fans of all types will find something to like here I suspect. I shared the title track as a single previously in the newsletter and it’s still probably my favorite song here but there are some other great tracks as well like opener “I Don’t Belong”.
!!! is back with a new EP, Certified Heavy Kats which is out via Warp. Lotta rave vibes on this one, tons of grooves as always. For me, this is the best thing the band has put out in a while and I like all their stuff. Really recommend this one.
Rival Consoles released Articulation this week. This is a great electronic album, gorgeous sounds all over this. I think this is a brilliant effort and it comes via Erased Tapes. If you want to dive into a new record label with lots of gems in the catalog that’s a good place to start.
The label Sacred Bones has released a single from an upcoming release Music From Patch Cord Productions, which features rare and unreleased songs from Mother Earth’s Plantasia creator Mort Garson’s archives.
Sign me up for anything TOBACCO touches. This is a pretty upbeat danceable track but with all the trademarks fans have come to expect. Great stuff.
Legit quality cover from Hinds of “Spanish Bombs” by The Clash. Dig this a lot.
The Beths played an awesome Live at Home set on KEXP, even fashioning their own version of the Live on KEXP studio. Their new album is great, check it out if you haven’t yet.
